HUNGARIAN GP - FREE PRACTICE #1 - RE-CAP & TIMES
Ricciardo’s flying laps and race pace both suggested he might be able to challenge Mercedes in this weekend’s GP. His fastest lap was three tenths of a second faster than that of Lewis Hamilton, who finished the session third.
Kimi Raikkonen took second fastest, two tenths of a second slower than Ricciardo, whilst team-mate Sebastian Vettel could only manage sixth fastest.
The session was stopped early when Antionio Giovinazzi, driving Kevin Magnussen’s Haas, lost the rear of his car and span into the wall. He damaged the car, bringing out the red flag.
He wasn’t the only one spinner on the dusty track, with Romain Grosjean in the other Haas damaging the rear of his car after touching the tyre barrier.
Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas was flying early in the session, but was knocked down to fifth, behind Max Verstappen.
Verstappen was on a flying lap late in the session, with a personal best first sector, when Jolyon Palmer brought out the red flag.
The Renault driver ran wide at turn four and over the tough double kerb, damaging the front of his car. He parked on track with a broken front wing and punctured front right tyre. Stoffel Vandoorne was running right behind Palmer on track and described the incident over the radio: “Palmer ran off and broke everything on his car.”
It was a positive session for McLaren. Fernando Alonso finished seventh, only a hundredth of a second faster than Vandoorne.
Nico Hulkenberg and Palmer rounded off the top 10.
