Abu Dhabi GP: Race - RE-CAP & RESULTS

ABU DHABI GP - RACE - RE-CAP & RESULTS

Five time champion Lewis Hamilton rounded out the 2018 Formula 1 season with his 11th victory of the year in Abu Dhabi.

The Mercedes driver ran a mammoth second stint after completing his only pit stop of the season on lap seven of 55.

Hamilton was the first man to pit, taking advantage of an early Virtual Safety Car, brought out when Kimi Raikkonen’s Ferrari came to a stop on the pit straight.

He emerged in P5, behind Max Verstappen, who had dropped backwards after his car went into anti-stall as he left the grid.

The pair swapped places as they battled for P4, with Verstappen taking the upper hand until he came into the pits on lap 33.

With Valtteri Bottas pitting the lap before Verstappen, Hamilton was promoted to the net race lead but Daniel Ricciardo – running an extra long stint in the Red Bull – was still in the overall lead.

Ricciardo led for more than 15 laps before coming into the pits, releasing Hamilton into the lead.

Vettel spent most of the race running behind Bottas, but a lock up for the Finn allowed the Ferrari to snatch second.

Vettel was more than six seconds behind Hamilton when he claimed P2, but put in a series of fast laps to cut the gap down to 2.581s before the chequered flag.

Verstappen claimed third after another lock-up for Bottas, who then dropped back to fifth with a late pit stop.

“B-series” champion Nico Hulkenberg was wiped out in a dramatic crash on the opening lap. He collided with Romain Grosjean and barrel rolled through the gravel. He came to a stop upside down, with the Renault briefly catching fire.

Hulkenberg was extracted without any significant injuries but the safety car was called to clear the stranded Renault.

Team-mate Carlos Sainz picked up best of the rest in P5, ahead of Charles Leclerc, who struggled to recover after an early pit stop.

Sergio Perez took P8, with the Haas duo rounding out the top 10, Romain Grosjean beating team-mate Kevin Magnussen.

Fernando Alonso narrowly missed out on points in P11, finishing ahead of Brendon Hartley, Lance Stroll, Stoffel Vandoorne, and Sergey Sirotkin.

Pirerre Gasly and Esteban Ocon retired without leaks late in the race, after Marcus Ericsson came to a stop with mechanical problem on lap 24.

Singapore GP: Race - RE-CAP & RESULTS

SINGAPORE GP - RACE - RE-CAP & RESULTS

Lewis Hamilton claimed a dominant victory in Singapore as a poor strategy put Sebastian Vettel third, extending the gap at the top of the championship standings.

Hamilton finished almost nine seconds ahead of Max Verstapen and 40s ahead of Vettel.

The pole-sitting Mercedes made a strong start while fellow front row starter Verstappen was forced to defend against Vettel. The Red Bull put up a strong fight but Vettel had the better pace and was able to pull ahead at turn seven, just before the safety car was brought out.

Further back, Sergio Perez collided with team-mate Esteban Ocon, forcing the Frenchman into the wall and out of the race.

With tyre wear crucial in Singapore, Hamilton wasn’t quick to build a gap to Vettel, and all the front runners limited their pace in the first stint.

The Ferrari was the first to dive into the pits just 14 laps into the 61 lap race, switching the hypersoft tyres to the harder ultrasofts. Vettel came out just behind Perez and he spent two laps struggling to find a way through before he was released into free air.

Hamilton was the next to pit, taking soft tyres and returning to the net-lead.

Verstappen followed on the next lap, also switching to the soft tyres. Despite his Renault engine spluttering as he left the pits, the Red Bull driver was able to emerge just ahead of Vettel, reclaiming the P2 he’d lost 16 laps earlier.

Hamilton was unchallenged to the chequered flag, taking his seventh win of the season and extending his championship lead to 40 points.

On the softer tyres, Vettel was forced to be more conservative than Verstappen and couldn’t push for the second place position. He nursed his tyres across the line, dropping half a minute behind the Red Bull driver by the chequered flag.

Valtteri Bottas spent the majority of the race in “net” P4, but the position came under threat late in the race. The Mercedes driver was struggling to close the gap to back-marker Nico Hulkenberg enough to trigger the blue flags and felt as if he was being held up by the Renault. The lack of pace meant Kimi Raikkonen and Daniel Ricciardo were able to close the gap, but nobody was able to make a move before the chequered flag.

Slower cars were also a problem for the midfield drivers. Perez, who started the race on the hypersoft tyres, came out behind the Williams duo of Lance Stroll and Sergey Sirotkin after his pit stop. With both Williams drivers on soft tyres, neither were scheduled to pit soon and Perez would have to find a way past himself to keep his race alive. Sirotkin held Perez up and the Force India swerved at him as he came past, picking up a puncture and allowing Hulkenberg through to pick up the final points paying position

The incident dropped Perez down the order again and he finished 16th, ahead only of Brendon Hartley, Kevin Magnussen, and Sirotkin.

Fernando Alonso was the “best of the rest” driver and the final man who wasn’t lapped, finishing P7 ahead of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc.

RESULTS:

1. Lewis Hamilton / Mercedes-Mercedes / Great Britain / + 25 Points
2. Max Verstappen / Red Bull Racing-TAG-Heuer / Netherlands / + 18 Points
3. Sebastian Vettel / Ferrari-Ferrari / Germany / + 15 Points

German GP: Race - RE-CAP & RESULTS

GERMAN GP - RACE - RE-CAP & RESULTS

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton reclaimed the title lead with victory at the German Grand Prix after Sebastian Vettel crashed out of the lead in changing conditions.

Vettel led the majority of the first half of the race while Hamilton climbed up from 14th on the grid. The German briefly fell behind Kimi Raikkonen – who was running a two stop strategy -  but Ferrari ordered Raikkonen to let his team-mate past.

Meanwhile, Hamilton had climbed up to third with an extra long first stint. Mercedes was banking on rain, planning on putting Hamilton straight on Intermediate tyres, but Hamilton was struggling on the soft tyres and was forced to pit.

Moments later, the rain came and a number of mid-field drivers came into the pits for Intermediate tyres. Red Bull opted to gamble and call Max Verstappen in from fifth, putting him on the green walled Pirellis. The grooved tyres only lasted a few laps before the rain began to clear and those who had taken the gamble returned to the pits for new slicks. Verstappen remained fifth, but put himself out of the battle at the sharp end of the field.

Conditions were still treacherous, with a number of drivers including Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez spinning on the wet track.

Vettel was beginning to settle in the lead of the race when he pushed a little too hard, sending his Ferrari through the gravel and into the wall. It brought an end to the German’s race – and his lead at the top of the points standings – and brought out the safety car.

Raikkonen and Valtteri Bottas both came into the pits for fresh tyres. Hamilton, who had now been promoted to third, was initially called into the pits, but was told as he pulled into the pit lane to stay out. The Mercedes was forced to cut across the grass to rejoin the track, prompting a reprimand from the stewards.

Hamilton led Bottas and Raikkonen behind the safety car. On the restart, Hamilton struggled with cooler tyres and Bottas was able to challenge his team-mate. The pair ran side by side for a number of corners before Hamilton was able to get heat into his tyres and escape up the road while Bottas was told to hold position.

Raikkonen was unable to challenge Bottas in the closing stages of the race and finished third, ahead of Verstappen.

Verstappen’s team-mate Daniel Ricciardo suffered another DNF after starting from the back of the grid due to an engine change. He’d been enjoying a strong drive up through the field when he stopped at the side of the field with a power unit problem.

Nico Hulkenberg finished fifth after battling with Romain Grosjean, Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon.

Marcus Ericsson took his third points finish of the season in ninth, ahead of Brendon Hartley.

Carlos Sainz took the chequered flag 10th, but was handed a 10 second penalty for overtaking under safety car conditions and dropped back to 12th, behind Kevin Magnussen, on the corrected times.

Stoffel Vandoorne, Pierre Gasly, and Charles Leclerc were the last of the finishers.

RESULTS:

1. Lewis Hamilton / Mercedes-Mercedes / Great Britain / + 25 Points
2. Valtteri Bottas / Mercedes-Mercedes / Finland / + 18 Points

British GP: Race - RE-CAP & RESULTS

BRITISH GP - RACE - RE-CAP & RESULTS

Sebastian Vettel wins a thrilling British Grand Prix to extend his lead at the top of the 2018 Formula 1 championship.

Vettel snatched the lead off the line while pole sitter Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen collided as they battled for position. He held the lead through the first set of pit stops, but fell behind the Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas when the Ferrari returned to the pits during a late safety car. He pushed back on fresh tyres, trying to find a way past Bottas before finally finding a way through in the closing laps of the race.

Hamilton was bogged down off the line, falling behind Vettel, Bottas and Raikkonen. He attempted a move around the outside of Raikkonen to reclaim the position, but a lock up from Raikkonen caused a collision and Hamilton was sent into a spin. The Brit dropped to the back of the field, starting an impressive climb up the order.

Both cars appeared relatively unharmed, and Raikkonen was handed a 10 second penalty for the incident.

Within six laps, Hamilton was up in the top 10. The Mercedes pitted late in the pit stop window, emerging sixth, behind Raikkonen.

After the early pit stops, Vettel led Bottas, Max Verstappen, Daniel Ricciardo, Raikkonen and Hamilton, with both Red Bull drivers pitting early.

With tyre wear looking marginal at Silverstone, Red Bull gambled and brought Ricciardo in for fresh tyres 30 laps into the 52 lap race, with the expectation neither Ferrari would make it to the chequered flag without mimicking the move.

Any advantage was undone moments later when the Sauber of Marcus Ericsson span into the tyre barriers at Abby, bringing out the safety car and gifting the front runners a free stop.

Ferrari opted to take fresh rubber while Mercedes, who didn’t have any new soft tyres, left both drivers out. It put Bottas in the lead, with Vettel ahead of Hamilton in second.

On the restart, Bottas held onto the lead while Raikkonen and Verstappen ran side by side. The Ferrari managed to get through into third, but Verstappen retook the position at the following corner.

The fight for third was cut short when Carlos Sainz and Romain Grosjean came together, sending both cars into the gravel and bringing out a second safety car.

When the race restarted, it was a frantic dash to the flag. Raikkonen managed to pass Verstappen and closed the gap to the top three, making it a four way fight for the race lead. Bottas, struggling on old tyres, came under pressure from Vettel, but the Mercedes driver managed to defend well, holding on to the lead until the final laps of the race.

Vettel made a move up the inside to take the race lead and immediately managed to build a gap to Bottas, finishing more than two seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Bottas continued to struggle on old tyres, dropping back to fourth, while Hamilton and Raikkonen were inherited to the podium positions.

The Red Bull duo had been running fifth and sixth when slight contact sent Verstappen into a spin. He was able to continue, but later pulled to the side of the track to retire with a brake-by-wire issue.

Nico Hulkenberg, who started outside the top 10 in P11, climbed up to sixth at the start of the race. Though he dropped down a position as Hamilton climbed up the order, he picked up the position again after Verstappen was forced to retire.

Esteban Ocon took seventh after a strong start, ahead of Fernando Alonso, Kevin Magnussen, and Pierre Gasly.

Charles Leclerc had been running at the sharp end of the field in the early stages of the race, but a problem in his pit stop forced him to pull over soon after returning to the track, retiring just 18 laps in.

Brendon Hartley, who suffered a heavy crash after a suspension failure in FP3, retired after one lap due to more mechanical issues.

Sergio Perez dropped to the back of the field after a collision with Ericsson off the line. The Force India was sent into a spin, almost collecting the Williams duo, who were forced to start from the pits. He managed a strong recovery, finishing 11th, ahead of Stoffel Vandoorne, Lance Stroll, and Sergey Sirotkin.

While Gasly had originally finished in 10th, he was demoted to 13th after receiving a time penalty for causing a collision with Perez. This promoted Perez up into the points.

RESULTS:

1. Sebastian Vettel / Ferrari-Ferrari / Germany / + 25 Points
2. Lewis Hamilton / Mercedes-Mercedes / Great Britain / + 18 Points
3. Kimi Raikkonen / Ferrari-Ferrari / Finland / + 15 Points

Azerbaijan GP: Race - RE-CAP & RESULTS

AZERBAIJAN GP - RACE - RE-CAP & RESULTS

Lewis Hamilton celebrated his first win of the 2018 season after an intense race in Baku.

7 retirements ended dreams and podium hopes for some, while others were victorious with points and records that were broken.

The race started off with multiple accidents within the first few laps. Sirotkin crashed into Perez, earning him a 3-Place-Grid-Penalty for the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix. Moments later, Ocon and Raikkonen collided in what was deemed a 'racing incident', although each driver had their own opinion on what happened.

Sirotkin picked up debris from the crash and then collided with Alonso. Alonso ended up with a double puncture from the accident. Magnussen got hit by Ericsson and ended up with a double puncture as well.

Sirotkin and Ocon both retired from the damage of their accidents, while Raikkonen was able to escape the same fate and continue on, in the hopes of catching up.

Nico Hulkenberg was the next retirement after he got it wrong around a corner and crashed into the wall. He took fault for the accident, which was just an unlucky mistake. Team-mate, Sainz, had a better race and finished up in 5th, bringing 10 points to the team.

The Red Bull duo ended their podium hopes by colliding with each-other at high speeds. Ricciardo ended up catching air off of the back of Verstappen's car and the two were sent spinning into one of the run-off areas. They were each given a reprimand, but according to Helmut Marko, the two will continue to be allowed to race each other.

Romain Grosjean was the next to drop off after he made a mistake and crashed into the wall during the safety car. He claimed Ericsson hit him, but replays show the Sauber passing by, much after Grosjean's Haas was already in the wall.

Bottas, who was on the hunt for the win after gaining the lead off of Vettel, who had previously been in first, had a sudden and shocking retirement when he suffered a random tyre puncture. The tyre exploded and there wasn't much he could do, being too far away from the pit-lane.

Lewis Hamilton moved into the lead, following the retirement of Bottas and Raikkonen moved up to second, while Perez in the lone Force India, found himself in third. Perez had earlier served a time penalty in the pits for overtaking during one of the many safety car periods.

On the final lap, Kevin Magnussen found himself in more trouble as he collided with Gasly as the two eagerly tried to grab onto the final point. Magnussen squeezed Gasly over too far and the two collided. They were both still able to finish the race, but it was dangerous and Magnussen ended up with a 10-Second-Time-Penalty added to his final race time.

Following the race, Perez and multiple other drivers were summoned to the stewards for what appeared to be illegal use of DRS. Perez, Magnussen and Stroll were all let free and Perez was able to keep his 3rd place finish, earning him a new record. Perez has surpassed all other Mexican F1 drivers for most podiums with a total of 8.

Also breaking a record was Charles Leclerc, who got his first F1 points of the season by finishing in 6th. A remarkable achievement for him and for the Swiss team. Leclerc is now the first Monegasque driver to score points since 1950.

Brendon Hartley also came away from the race with his first ever F1 championship point, by finishing in 10th. Ericsson and Gasly were the only two behind Hartley to finish the race.

Alonso, Stroll, Vettel and Vandoorne also took home points.

The first In-Season test will take place over the course of two days, following the Spanish Grand Prix.
