German GP: Race - RE-CAP & RESULTS

GERMAN GP - RACE - RE-CAP & RESULTS

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton reclaimed the title lead with victory at the German Grand Prix after Sebastian Vettel crashed out of the lead in changing conditions.

Vettel led the majority of the first half of the race while Hamilton climbed up from 14th on the grid. The German briefly fell behind Kimi Raikkonen – who was running a two stop strategy -  but Ferrari ordered Raikkonen to let his team-mate past.

Meanwhile, Hamilton had climbed up to third with an extra long first stint. Mercedes was banking on rain, planning on putting Hamilton straight on Intermediate tyres, but Hamilton was struggling on the soft tyres and was forced to pit.

Moments later, the rain came and a number of mid-field drivers came into the pits for Intermediate tyres. Red Bull opted to gamble and call Max Verstappen in from fifth, putting him on the green walled Pirellis. The grooved tyres only lasted a few laps before the rain began to clear and those who had taken the gamble returned to the pits for new slicks. Verstappen remained fifth, but put himself out of the battle at the sharp end of the field.

Conditions were still treacherous, with a number of drivers including Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez spinning on the wet track.

Vettel was beginning to settle in the lead of the race when he pushed a little too hard, sending his Ferrari through the gravel and into the wall. It brought an end to the German’s race – and his lead at the top of the points standings – and brought out the safety car.

Raikkonen and Valtteri Bottas both came into the pits for fresh tyres. Hamilton, who had now been promoted to third, was initially called into the pits, but was told as he pulled into the pit lane to stay out. The Mercedes was forced to cut across the grass to rejoin the track, prompting a reprimand from the stewards.

Hamilton led Bottas and Raikkonen behind the safety car. On the restart, Hamilton struggled with cooler tyres and Bottas was able to challenge his team-mate. The pair ran side by side for a number of corners before Hamilton was able to get heat into his tyres and escape up the road while Bottas was told to hold position.

Raikkonen was unable to challenge Bottas in the closing stages of the race and finished third, ahead of Verstappen.

Verstappen’s team-mate Daniel Ricciardo suffered another DNF after starting from the back of the grid due to an engine change. He’d been enjoying a strong drive up through the field when he stopped at the side of the field with a power unit problem.

Nico Hulkenberg finished fifth after battling with Romain Grosjean, Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon.

Marcus Ericsson took his third points finish of the season in ninth, ahead of Brendon Hartley.

Carlos Sainz took the chequered flag 10th, but was handed a 10 second penalty for overtaking under safety car conditions and dropped back to 12th, behind Kevin Magnussen, on the corrected times.

Stoffel Vandoorne, Pierre Gasly, and Charles Leclerc were the last of the finishers.

Bottas Confirmed At Mercedes

BOTTAS CONFIRMED AT MERCEDES FOR 2019

Valtteri Bottas will continue with Mercedes for a third season after signing a one-year contract extension, with an option for a further year.

The announcement comes just a day after the team confirmed Lewis Hamilton will remain at the squad until 2020.

Bottas joined Mercedes in 2017 after reigning champion Nico Rosberg retired. Since then, the Finn has taken three victories, including his first F1 win in Russia last season.

“It is great news that I will be racing for Mercedes in 2019 and it is nice to announce it here in Hockenheim – not just the home race for Mercedes but also the circuit where I took my first ever single-seater wins back in 2007,” he said.

“This year, with a full winter of preparation, I have been able to make a good step forward – and I believe that there is still more to come. We have not been lucky in the races this year but the team knows how I am performing, and this is a great sign of confidence in me and my driving.

I enjoy working with the team, and also being team-mates with Lewis. We have a good relationship, honest and straightforward, and always aiming to get the right results for Mercedes.”

Bottas currently lies fifth in the drivers’ championship, with four second place finishes so far this season.

Hamilton Confirms New Mercedes Contract

HAMILTON SIGNS NEW MERCEDES CONTRACT

Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton has signed a two year contract to continue at Mercedes until 2020.

Hamilton joined the Mercedes work team in 2013, and has since scored 44 victories with the squad.

Despite being approached by a rival team, the four time world champion said resigning with Mercedes was a formality and he’d agreed to continue with the squad over the winter.

“This contract extension has basically been a formality, since Toto and I sat down during the winter, so it’s good to put pen to paper, announce it and then get on with business as usual,” he said.

“I have been part of the Mercedes racing family for 20 years and I have never been happier inside a team than I am right now.

We are on the same wavelength both on and off track – and I am looking forward to winning more in the future and shining even more light on the three-pointed star. I’m very confident that Mercedes is the right place to be over the coming years.”

Hamilton is only the third driver to be confirmed for the 2019 Formula 1 season, along with Sebastian Vettel at Ferrari and Max Verstappen at Red Bull.

Hamilton’s 2018 team-mate Valtteri Bottas is yet to announce his plans for the upcoming season.

Mercedes Launch 2018 Car

(Image credit to: Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport)

Mercedes has launched its 2018 Formula 1 challenger, the W09 EQ Power+, at a filming day at Silverstone.

Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton both got a small taste of the new machinery, completing 100km of the British track between them.

After a successful 2017, the new car is an evolution of its predecessor, with no major change in design philosophy.

“We like some of the character traits from our diva,” said team principal Toto Wolf. “The W08 was the fastest car on the grid, scoring the highest number of pole positions and winning the most races last year. So we were careful not to lose the car’s main strength just to overcome the difficulties.”

Like with all 2018 cars, the most notable differences are the lack of shark fin and T-wing and the addition of the halo head protection device, but the technical regulations have remained largely the same, which technical director James Allison believes allowed the team to make a more elegant car this year.

“Last year’s regulations were brand new and we weren’t quite sure which direction they would take us in,” he said. “So last year’s car had a certain amount of wiggle room to adapt if we found that we needed to move around certain aspects of the car.

This year, being a little more confident of what we’re aiming for, we’ve been able to commit more fully to certain concepts. So we have the packaging much tighter and have taken things to more of an extreme.”

Since the change in engine regulations ahead of the 2014 season, the Mercedes power unit has been dominant. Though the manufacturer has never been able to stand still when it comes to engine development, “substantial” changes in the regulations have led to significant updates this winter.

“The amount of change on the power unit for this year is quite considerable and driven by a number of requirements,” said Andy Cowell, managing director of Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains.. “The biggest challenge we’ve got is lifting our durability limit with the challenge of racing just three engines per driver per championship and two ERS systems.

That’s a 40 per cent increase in the distance that the hardware needs to do for this year compared with last year. We focused on trying to increase the life of the hardware without losing performance.”

He added that the team also worked to increase combustion efficiency and reduce hardware friction.

Mercedes Confirms Bottas

VALTTERI BOTTAS CONFIRMED AT MERCEDES FOR 2018

Valtteri Bottas will continue with Mercedes Formula 1 team in 2018.

The 28-year-old joined Mercedes at the start of 2017 after the shock retirement of reigning world champion Nico Rosberg. Since then, Bottas has taken nine podium finishes from 13 races, including two race wins. He is currently third in the drivers’ championship.

Bottas had initially only signed a single-year deal, but has now confirmed he will race with Mercedes in 2018.

“As a driver, I’ve been able to learn and grow massively and we have already enjoyed some really good moments this season that I will never forget,” he said.

I’ve been very impressed by the mentality, commitment and the team spirit this team holds.

Partnering Lewis has also been really good and I’m enjoying the respect we have and the will to push the team forward together.

When the team hired me for the 2017 season, they took a leap of faith by putting their trust in my skills. The new contract for 2018 shows that I’ve earned that trust.

I’m happy to have celebrated my first race wins in a Silver Arrow. However, there’s always room for improvement and I still have not shown my full potential.”

Bottas took his first race win in Russia at the start of the season. His best finish up until that point had been two second place finishes for Williams in 2014.

One of the key benefits Bottas brought to Mercedes, aside from strong potential, was the promise of a less rocky relationship with team-mate Hamilton than his predecessor.

“For our team, the bonus factors are the respect and sportsmanship that have grown between our two drivers,” said team boss Toto Wolff. “The chemistry and dynamic between Valtteri and Lewis work and are what we need to take the fight to our competitors.

There have been ups and downs – more ups, fewer downs – and some great highlights like his two race wins in Russia and Austria. Overall, the balance of his performances and his upward trajectory made it a no-brainer for us to continue with him in 2018.”

Monaco GP: Driver Preview Quotes - Mercedes

DRIVER PREVIEW QUOTES - MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS FORMULA 1 TEAM

Lewis Hamilton - "It’s a circuit which is all about mental strength. You need to be sharp and clear. Experience counts here too – that helps massively in setting the car up. I’ve been doing this for a long time now. I spend a lot of time at the factory with the engineers to understand past races. Just the other night, I was driving around the track in my Smart car, visualizing the circuit. It’s not so easy, though, when there are lots of cars around!

We have new cars this weekend which are wider and faster, so that’s going to be a massive challenge. In trying to push the car as close as you can to the limit, it’ll be a real test of your awareness of where the car is. I’m sure there will be some brushing of the barriers. The most important thing is that you have to learn to walk before you run. You have to build up to the pace so that, by the time you work up to that second run in Q3, you’re at 100 percent.”

Valtteri Bottas - “It’s one of those weekends when you really need to be on the top of your game. You need to be so focused on what is a mentally exhausting weekend. You need to be focused on every single car of every single lap, because one mistake will cost you. Monaco is always a great challenge. We live for these kinds of challenges.”

Mercedes Reveal W08

MERCEDES REVEAL THE W08

Whilst many teams have answered the regulation changes with radical new designs, Mercedes have opted to stay as traditional as possible with their 2017 challenger, the W08 EQ Power+.

The car Lewis Hamilton ran ahead of the official launch was tightly packaged at the rear and had a large floor. Most notable, though, was the lack of shark fin that has been favoured by most of the other teams that have launched so far, though the team tested the fin later in the day.

“The new rules for 2017 were designed to make the fastest F1 cars ever through a big increase in aerodynamic performance,” said team boss Toto Wolff. “They should be more physical to drive and hopefully more spectacular for the fans to watch. The proof will come in the opening races, but we have probably achieved that target.”

Mercedes have dominated the championship since the need engine regulations came into play in 2014, but the team isn’t taking anything for granted.

“In terms of relative performance, it’s clear that any rule change brings with it a big reset but also a big opportunity,” said Wolff. “This is the time to stay humble and keep our feet on the ground. None of the teams have raced under these rules, and we all have the same points right now: zero.”

Wolff also hinted that the car Hamilton and new teammate Valtteri Bottas drove at Silverstone won’t stay the same throughout the season.

“This year, in season development will play a big role in determining the championship outcome. None of us know where we will stand at the first race but I am confident that, whatever that position is, we have the people and the capability to deal with every challenge that comes our way. This will be the season where our full works team can show its true strength."

Mercedes has also opted to keep the familiar silver and turquoise colour scheme as Petronas remains onboard.

Bottas Confirmed At Mercedes

VALTTERI BOTTAS CONFIRMED AT MERCEDES FOR 2017

The worst kept secret in Formula One – that Valtteri Bottas was set to replace Nico Rosberg at Mercedes – has finally been confirmed.

The Finnish driver makes the switch from Williams, where he started his Formula One career, and will join Lewis Hamilton at the constructors’ championship winning team.

Team boss Toto Wolff described Rosberg’s decision to leave the team as a “challenging situation” but is happy to have Bottas – who he manages – on the team.

“Nico’s decision in December was a big surprise – certainly a challenging situation for the team to handle,” he said. “But weathering the storm makes you more resilient and we see this as another opportunity for the team to grow."

“Valtteri is a no-nonsense guy: down to earth, straightforward and very honest… He has an impressive track record in the junior categories and nine podiums in F1. But now it’s time for the next level, to see how he can set up to challenge for race wins and for the Championships.”

Bottas is, understandably, pleased with the move. Bottas’ best finish for Williams was second in 2014. In the Mercedes, it’s unlikely he’ll be challenging for anything other than wins.

“It’s definitely another dream come true, to race in another team with such great history, especially in the recent years, which have been so impressive,” he said. “I’m really proud to become a part of that and grateful to everyone at Mercedes for trusting my skills and giving me this opportunity."

“I know the Power Unit well from the last three years with Williams, but there are a lot of new things to learn with the car and also with how the team operates at the factory, in testing, and at races.”

Should Manor not continue in Formula One, Bottas will be the last driver confirmed for the 2017 season, as Felipe Massa returns to Williams to take his former teammate’s seat. With the new regulations in place, this could be even more of a hindrance to Mercedes than usual, meaning the team and Bottas have a busy time ahead to get the Finn up to speed.

Wolff is confident Bottas is up for the challenge though.

“We have confidence in Valtteri’s ability, and it’s one of the reasons that he is the driver we set our sights on this winter,” he said. “The next weeks will be busy as we work to build relationships so Valtteri understands the team and the car. But that’s an exciting challenge that will bring us fresh energy and a new dynamic between the drivers. And, of course, we’re working hard to give Lewis and Valtteri the car they need to do the job.”

Nico Rosberg will come back to the team in an ambassadorial role in 2017.

Sauber Confirms Wehrlein For 2017

WEHRLEIN CONFIRMED AT SAUBER FOR 2017 SEASON

Pascal Wehrlein faces a new challenge this season as he switches to Sauber for his second year in Formula One.

The German moves away from Mercedes run Manor, after missing out on the seat at Force India at the end of last year.

Monisha Kaltenborn, team principal at Sauber, says Wehrlein showed potential throughout his junior career, including second in the Euro F3 series and a win in the DTM in 2015.

“Pascal has shown his talent throughout his career, in single seater racing as well as in the DTM,” said Kaltenborn. “Last year, in his rookie Formula One season, he proved his potential by scoring one point in the Austrian GP in Spielberg. There is surely more to come from Pascal, and we want to give him the chance to further grow and learn at the pinnacle of motorsport.”

Wehrlein will partner Marcus Ericsson, who continues at the team for a third consecutive year. Kaltenborn believes the pair will work well together.

Working with Ericsson, who has scored nine points in his three years in F1, may allow Wehrlein to develop and learn, but it’s a far shout from the Mercedes seat he almost seemed destined for. The German described the upcoming year as a “challenge”.

“It’s a new challenge in a new team, and I am really excited and looking forward to this new adventure,” he said. “Our objective is to establish ourselves in the mid-field and to score points on a regular basis.

“That being said, I will do my best to support Sauber. Now I am looking forward to meeting everyone in the team and to tackling the preparations for the 2017 season.”

Wehrlein also thanked Mercedes for their support.

Paddy Lowe Leaves Mercedes

LOWE LEAVES MERCEDES

Mercedes Executive Technical Director Paddy Lowe is now on gardening leave ahead of leaving the team. It’s expected he will move to Williams as part of the deal to secure Valtteri Bottas to replace Nico Rosberg.

Lowe has been a part of the Mercedes team for three years, and played a key role in the team’s domination in recent years.

Though Mercedes didn’t name a replacement for the outgoing technical chief – the “stable” organisation will run under its current Engineering, Performance, and Technology directors, and their chief operating officer – it’s expected James Allison will join the team from Ferrari after his own gardening leave.

“Paddy has played an important part in our success during the past three and a half years and we thank him for his contribution to this significant chapter in Mercedes’ motorsport history,” said Toto Wolff.

“Success in Formula 1 is not about single individual but about the strength in depth and technical capability of an organisation."

“We have the talent in place to continue our success of recent years and we plan to build upon it in 2017 and beyond.”

Nico Rosberg Retires From Formula 1

NICO ROSBERG ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT FROM F1

Nico Rosberg has announced his retirement from Formula One only a week after winning the World Drivers Championship for the first time.
Rosberg thanked everybody who “supported me to make that dream happen” after announcing he would be leaving the series, despite having already signed a contract to stay at Mercedes for the 2017 season.
“This season, I tell you, it was so damn tough. I pushed like crazy in every area after the disappointments of the last two years; they fueled my motivation to levels I had never experienced before,” Rosberg said. “And, of course, that had an impact on the ones I love too – it was a whole family effort of sacrifice, putting everything behind our target.”
Rosberg told few people about his intentions to retire, making the announcement a shock to most of the motorsports world.
“When I won the race in Suzuka, from the moment when the destiny of the title was in my own hands, the big pressure started and I bag to think about ending my racing career if I became World Champion,” he said. “On Sunday morning in Abu Dhabi, I knew that it could be my last race and that feeling cleared my head before the start. I wanted to enjoy every part of the experience, knowing it might be the last time."
Rosberg said he decided on Monday evening, the day after securing the title.
Team boss Toto Wolff has said the team will start looking for a replacement on Monday. Mercedes junior driver Pascal Wehrlein is thought to be a favourite, but Fernando Alonso is one of a number of drivers also rumoured to be heading to the team.

Abu Dhabi GP: Race - Re-Cap & Results

ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX - RACE

As the 2016 season came to a close, one thing was on everyone's minds. Rosberg or Hamilton? Who would take home the 2016 Championship Title? It had come down to the final race, under the lights of Yas Marina Circuit and the crowds were filled with emotions and nerves.

Lewis Hamilton was on Pole Position, but knew it would take more than just winning the race to grab the title. Rosberg knew all he had to do was finish on the podium if Hamilton won the race. With Rosberg starting 2nd, his chances were high.

It was a fairly clean lap one apart from a few mishaps at the back of the pack. Kevin Magnussen was the first to retire from the race with a steering issue after damage to his car. Not the way he'd wanted to finish the season. The Dane heads to Haas next year, bidding farewell to the Renault Sport team.

Ricciardo, who had started from 3rd, found himself being pushed back as other drivers passed by, including Vettel and Raikkonen. Raikkonen quickly moved towards both Mercedes drivers and even challenged Rosberg for a moment.

Valtteri Bottas was the next driver to end the season on a low, retiring with suspension damage from a bump on the surface of the circuit that he'd hit. Team-mate, Felipe Massa, who leaves F1, finished the race in 9th, grabbing his final 2 Championship points in the sport. Jenson Button, who is also leaving F1, retired with suspension damage as well while his team-mate, Alonso, finished in 10th to take the final point.

Max Verstappen, who was spun early on in the opening laps, was making his way back towards the front, doing what he could to find enough speed to look for a spot on the podium to end his first season with Red Bull on a high.

Both Toro Rosso drivers retired from the race with gearbox problems. Kvyat easily pulled his limping car over to the side of the circuit before hopping out while Sainz's retirement came later after Palmer crashed into the back of him and sent him into a spin. Sainz managed one more lap before he realized the car wasn't going to make it any further.

It was a quiet race for Force India with both Perez and Hulkenberg easily making their way around the circuit and staying in the top 10. The team finished 4th in the constructors, 35 points ahead of Williams. Perez finished the race in 8th and Hulkenberg in 7th, bringing them a final helping of 10 points.

While neither Sauber or Manor scored any points, it was Sauber who secured 10th in the standings after Felipe Nasr scored 2 points for the team at his home grand prix in Brazil. Nasr does not yet have a seat for 2017, while team-mate, Ericsson has been confirmed to stay with the Swiss team.

American team Haas, saw both drivers finish outside of the points but finish 8th in the constructors with a total of 29 points, all scored by Romain Grosjean, who will remain with the team in 2017. Gutierrez, who had multiple mechanical failures and near-point finishes, has not yet announced his plans for next year.

Up at the front, Hamilton was still leading the way, while Rosberg charged after him. Hamilton began to try other tactics, even slowing down to push Rosberg closer to Vettel and Verstappen, who were trying to pass the Championship contender. Hamilton went as far as ignoring team orders at an attempt to get the title, but in the end, Rosberg managed to steer clear of both the Ferrari and the Red Bull and finished 2nd, taking his first F1 Championship. Hamilton won the race while Sebastian Vettel grabbed the final podium spot, in 3rd.

Rosberg was ecstastic over the radio, cheering and yelling as his team and wife, Vivian, congratulated him. Rosberg and his father, Keke, are now only the second father-son duo to have F1 Championship titles after the Hills.

With the 2016 season now over, many changes will be seen in 2017, including new rules, wider tyres and a group of new, young drivers ready to break onto the scene and try for a chance at points, podiums and wins.

RESULTS:

1. Lewis Hamilton / Mercedes-Mercedes / Great Britain / + 25 Points
2. Nico Rosberg / Mercedes-Mercedes / Germany / + 18 Points
3. Sebastian Vettel / Ferrari-Ferrari / Germany / + 15 Points
4. Max Verstappen / Red Bull-TAG-HEUER / Netherlands / + 12 Points
5. Daniel Ricciardo / Red Bull-TAG-HEUER / Australia / + 10 Points
6. Kimi Raikkonen / Ferrari-Ferrari / Finland / + 8 Points
7. Nico Hulkenberg / Force India-Mercedes / Germany / + 6 Points
8. Sergio Perez / Force India-Mercedes / Mexico / + 4 Points
9. Felipe Massa / Williams-Mercedes / Brazil / + 2 Points
10. Fernando Alonso / McLaren-Honda / Spain / + 1 Point

Abu Dhabi GP: Driver Preview Quotes - Mercedes

DRIVER PREVIEW QUOTES - MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS FORMULA 1 TEAM

Nico Rosberg - “Obviously, the result in Brazil wasn't the one I was going for. But Lewis did a great job and second place wasn't a disaster in the end. I'm looking forward now to Abu Dhabi. It feels great to be in the World Championship battle with Lewis for a third year in a row. I will give it everything to end the season with a win. I've had a great week, relaxing and catching up with my family and friends, so I feel like I'm in a good place. In Brazil, after the race, I was joking that I would still be taking things one race at a time. But, the more I think about it, the more that's actually not as crazy as it sounds. I have to treat this like any other race. Doing a good job on a Grand Prix weekend is always a challenge. Nothing in this sport is easy, so this won't be any different and I still have to go all out for a good result. I have great memories from winning at this track last year and it's somewhere I've usually been strong in the past, so I have every reason to feel confident. The closer it gets, the more I'm feeling excited. It will be a big battle and hopefully the fans will get a great show to end the year.”

Lewis Hamilton - “To finally win in Brazil was a moment I'll never forget. It had been a long time coming. I'm in a good place right now. I'm feeling super strong in this amazing car that everyone at the factories has worked so hard to give us. I've had 31 wins in four years with this team so far, which is just crazy. I'm so thankful for the great opportunity these guys have given me. We're continuing to make history together. It's not been a perfect season and I'm faced with pretty impossible odds no matter what I do this weekend. But I can't and won't give up. You never know what might happen - however unlikely it may seem. I'll be proud of myself and what I've achieved as long as I feel I've given my all and performed at my best. And, whatever happens, I'm proud of everyone who's been a part of the success we've shared over the past few years. I'm approaching this weekend the same as I do every race. I want to win and I'll give it everything to finish the season on a high.”

Brazilian GP: Race - Re-Cap & Results

BRAZILIAN GRAND PRIX - RACE

The title fight will go down to the wire as Lewis Hamilton took his first win in Brazil after a stop-start race at Interlagos. Teammate and championship rival Nico Rosberg came home second and more than eleven seconds behind Hamilton.

Right from the start, the weather was causing trouble, the stewards deciding to delay the start of the race by ten minutes to give the rain a chance to ease. On the out lap to the grid, Romain Grosjean showed why, losing the rear end of his Haas under acceleration and crashing into the wall.

The rain didn’t ease up, and the race started behind a safety car so drivers could get a feel of the track conditions. After seven laps of follow the leader, the green flag was brought out and the race started proper. Hamilton immediately got off to a fantastic start, building up a gap to Roseberg. Behind them, Kimi Raikkonen was caught sleeping as Max Verstappen sped past him up the inside. In a matter of moments, the young Red Bull was on the back of Rosberg’s Mercedes. Verstappen swept across the track, finding the best grip on the still wet tarmac.

Already, drivers were beginning to pit for Intermediate tyres. Renault’s Kevin Magnussen was the first, but Jenson Button, Fernando Alonso, Valtteri Bottas, Felipe Massa, Daniil Kvyat, Jolyon Palmer, and Marcus Ericsson were all quick to follow. Not the Mercedes drivers, though. Both drivers were adamant it was too soon for the green walled tyres.

Sebastian Vettel proved them right. Still on wet tyres, the Ferrari driver was sent into a spin when he dropped a tyre onto the slippery white line, falling back through the field. Still, Vettel followed the flow of the competition and pitted for intermediate tyres.

A few laps later, Ericsson also spun, but his spin ended in the wall at the entry of the pit lane. The safety car was brought out and the pit lane entry was closed, but not before Max Verstappen had dived in to put intermediates on. It was before Daniel Riccardo came into the pits though. The Australian was later given a five second penalty for entering the pit lane whilst the entrance was closed. Home hero Felipe Massa was also under investigation and later handed the same penalty for overtaking before the safety car line on the first race start.

The safety car came into the pits on lap nineteen and almost immediately the chaos resumed. Kimi Raikkonen span at almost the exact same place as Ericsson, colliding with the pit wall and bouncing back onto the track, a Manor car narrowly avoiding the Ferrari. Meanwhile, Palmer crashed into the back of Kvyat, severely damaging his Renault. The red flags were brought out to clear the stricken Ferrari and, though Palmer was able to hobble back to the pits, he wouldn’t return to the track when the race resumed.

The race resumed under safety car conditions, with everybody back on wet tyres. Hamilton and Verstappen were both eager to get racing but, after just a few laps behind the safety car, the race was red flagged again, with running water on the track causing concern for race control.

After a lengthy delay, the race resumed again under the safety car. This time, the race would start again proper, and Verstappen was on the attack. It didn’t take long for the Red Bull to find a way past Roseberg, around the outside of turn three. Teammate Daniel Ricciardo was also on the move, slipping up the inside of Carlos Sainz to take fifth.

Vettel, after his earlier spin and pit stop, was working his way up through the pack. The German soon made his way into the point, knocking Manor’s Pascal Wehrlein into eleventh.

Verstappen tried to take the race to Hamilton, setting a fastest lap to attempt to close the gap to the championship contender, only for Hamilton to reply with a fastest lap of his own. Rosberg, however, was no where to be seen, unable to keep the pace in the wet conditions.

A big slide for Verstappen had everybody’s hearts in their throats. The Dutchman spun after touching the white line, and was sent into a slide, but was just about able to keep his Red Bull out of the barriers. Rosberg saw his chance to regain second, coming alongside Verstappen, but Verstappen was able to keep second place.

On lap forty, Ricciardo pitted for intermediate tyres, serving his five second penalty in the process. Meanwhile, Vettel was still pushing to move forwards. The Ferrari’s back-end was twitching as Vettel struggled to keep it under control, but that didn’t stop him trying to make a move on Alonso. The German managed to get past the McLaren car, but Alonso fought back. Vettel had the inside line, forcing Alonso off track as he kept the position, but both cars managed to keep going.

Verstappen, still running in second, followed Ricciardo’s lead and pitted for intermediate tyres, coming out in fifth position. Ricciardo proved that the switch was working by setting a fastest lap. Button, also on intermediates, had other ideas, though. He’d already said that there was no difference in grip between the two tyres, but now he wanted to put wets back on his McLaren. The McLaren came in to pit for wets and it soon became clear that was the right choice.

Felipe Massa crashed, bringing out the safety car and bringing an end to the Brazilian’s final home grand prix. It was an emotional scene as mechanics from Mercedes and Ferrari lined up to clap Massa on his way back to the pits. Massa sobbed as he was joined by his family, come to watch his final Grand Prix on the Interlagos circuit. Massa’s first home grand prix, way back at the start of his career, ended with a retirement, and so would his last.

There was still a race to go though. Ricciardo and Verstappen both pitted for wet tyres, making it seem like a podium might be out of reach for either Red Bull driver, but the race wasn’t over yet. As soon as the safety car returned to the pits, Verstappen got back to what he did best: overtaking.
One by one, Verstappen picked off drivers: Bottas, then Ricciardo, then Kvyat, Ocon, Nasr, Hulkenberg. The Red Bull looked almost unstoppable as he cut through the field. Sebastian Vettel, who had managed to climb up all the way to fifth, looked to put a stop to that progress though. V

Verstappen tried a move around the outside of the Ferrari, but Vettel closed the door on the youngster. Next, Verstappen tried the inside line, pushing Vettel onto the grass and speeding past the Ferrari. Another clean, decisive move brought Verstappen past former teammate Sainz, and then there was only Perez between him and the podium it seemed he was almost destined for. Verstappen looked at the outside line before trying to get past the Force India all the way around the outside. He briefly lost the back of the Red Bull, but kept in control to come side by side with Perez. Verstappen pushed past, into third.

Ahead, Hamilton had had a quiet race, speeding away whenever there wasn’t a red flag or a safety car, and took a comfortable win. The Brit has been trying for ten years to get a win at Interlagos and now, in the 44th race at the track, he’s got it. Rosberg finishing second brings the gap down to twelve points ahead of the final race at Abu Dhabi.

Brazilian GP: Driver Preview Quotes - Mercedes

DRIVER PREVIEW QUOTES - MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS FORMULA 1 TEAM

Nico Rosberg - “Mexico wasn’t ideal. I was going for the win as always but Lewis was just a little bit faster all weekend. Sometimes you just have to accept that and be satisfied with your work. I’m not going to change my approach. I need to keep doing what helps me perform at my best and that’s going for the win every time. There are still two races to go and anything can happen in this sport, so I need to focus my energy on the factors that I have in my control. I’ve got good form in Sao Paulo. It’s one of the real classic tracks, which usually produce some exciting races, so I’m looking forward to getting out there and having a big battle in front of those awesome Brazilian fans.”

Lewis Hamilton - “It’s a great feeling when you’re able to show the kind of pace I’ve shown at the past two races. Everyone has worked so hard and the car has really been faultless. The speed has been there all season - I just haven’t always had the opportunity to take advantage of it. In terms of the championship, it’s an unusual scenario to be in - fighting for something and not knowing for sure that what you do will guarantee you’re able to make it. One outcome would be painful and the other would be a great achievement. Regardless, I’m going to keep pushing. Since the beginning of my Formula One career I’ve seen that everything can change even at the very last moment, so you have to fight to the bitter end. I’ve never won in Brazil, so I go into this weekend focused on changing that.”

Mexican GP: Race - Re-Cap & Results

MEXICAN GRAND PRIX - RACE

Before the lights could even go out for the start of the race, it was bad news for Romain Grosjean who would have to start from pit-lane after the floor of his car was changed while under the rules and regulations of Parc Ferme. Both Haas drivers had already had trouble finding pace during Qualifying and this would only make matters worse for the American team.

Lewis Hamilton was able to make a quick getaway during the start, but Nico Rosberg was eager to catch him before he got too far ahead. Rosberg tried to make a pass and Hamilton ran wide and off  track, taking a trip through the grass before joining the track again ahead of Rosberg. No penalty was enforced as Hamilton had already been ahead of Rosberg and did not gain any unfair advantage.

Pascal Wehrlein's race was over before it even really got a chance to begin. He found himself involved in a 3-car collision between himself, Esteban Gutierrez and Marcus Ericsson. While the other two were able to drive away, Wehrlein's Manor had taken too much damage and it was race over. The collision was deemed a racing accident and no further action was taken.

Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg both finished in the points after a tough race. Perez had a late pit-stop after running as high as 5th and then found himself struggling to get back from 10th. He spent the later half of the race trying to catch up and pass both Williams drivers but was unable to do so. It was not the way he had wanted his home-race to go. Hulkenberg nearly lost out on points altogether after he was tagged and spun by Kimi Raikkonen in the final few laps. He was able to get his Force India back in the right direction and finish in 7th.

Esteban Gutierrez also found his home-race not going the way he wanted after the collision at the beginning of the race. After that, he struggled to catch back up and find pace. He finished in 19th, just one space ahead of his team-mate, Grosjean. Haas has not yet decided on their 2017 line-up but have told Gutierrez he will learn his future within the next 2-3 weeks.

Williams achieved another double points finish with Bottas in 8th and Massa in 9th. However, it wasn't enough to pass Force India in the constructors. Both Force India drivers also finished within the points and stay ahead in 4th by just 9 points. With two races left, both teams have a chance to secure that higher spot in the standings. Williams is also set to announce their replacement for the retiring Felipe Massa in the coming days.

While it was clear that Lewis Hamilton would bring home the win for Mercedes this time around, there was drama further back between Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen. Verstappen was running in 3rd but had been slowly losing pace on older tyres. Vettel was able to catch up within the final laps and attempted to overtake the Red Bull driver. Vettel was able to pass but Verstappen ran wide and went off track, then rejoined in front of Vettel. Verstappen was told to give the position back, but failed to do so. Vettel was quick to vent his frustration over the radio, using multiple explicit words while talking about the younger driver and then used some harsh words towards Charlie Whiting as well.

While Verstappen continued to run in 3rd, he was also continuing to slow down and it was holding up Vettel. This gave Daniel Ricciardo the chance to catch up and attempt a pass on the Ferrari. However, Vettel moved under braking and it was Ricciardo who was now fuming. The two nearly collided but were able to avoid any massive collision.

Before the podium ceremony, it was announced that Verstappen had a 5-Second-Time-Penalty added to his final race time and was demoted to 4th. He was led out of the pre-podium room and instead it was Vettel who joined race winner, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, who finished 2nd, on the podium. Later on, Vettel was handed a 10-Second-Time-Penalty to his own final race time and was demoted to 5th despite being earlier handed a trophy. Daniel Ricciardo was then promoted to 3rd and gained 15 points in the drivers standings.

With Lewis Hamilton winning the race, he now trails Rosberg in the drivers standings by just 19 points. This means that Hamilton still has a chance to take the Drivers Championship if he can win the final two races.

Toro Rosso, Renault, Sauber, McLaren and the lone Manor of Esteban Ocon, all finished outside of the points after a tough weekend, but still have a chance to score points when F1 heads to Brazil in 2 weeks before the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi.

RESULTS:

1. Lewis Hamilton / Mercedes-Mercedes / Great Britain / + 25 Points
2. Nico Rosberg / Mercedes-Mercedes / Germany / + 18 Points
