Austrian GP: Race - RE-CAP & RESULTS

AUSTRIAN GP - RACE - RE-CAP & RESULTS

Max Verstappen won the Austrian Grand Prix after Mercedes suffered a double DNF due to technical problems.

Lewis Hamilton initially took the race lead off the line, with pole-sitter Valtteri Bottas dropping to second with Max Verstappen and Kimi Raikkonen third and fourth.

But Mercedes’ race began to unfold when Bottas coasted to a stop early in the race. He came to a stop with a gear-box issue on track, bringing out the Virtual Safety Car. Ferrari and Red Bull pitted both their drivers under the VSC, but Mercedes opted to keep Hamilton out.

The team later brought Hamilton in under green flags, dropping the reigning champion to fourth, behind the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen, and handing Verstappen the race lead.

While Verstappen built a gap at the front of the field, his team-mate Daniel Ricciardo was scrapping with Raikkonen for the runner up position. The pair ran side by side for a number of corners, but the Ferrari just had the edge, with Ricciardo struggling with blistering on his Pirelli tyres. Ricciardo was forced to take a second pit stop for fresh tyres, dropping him out of the podium battle.

Behind them, the recovering Sebastian Vettel, who started sixth after a grid penalty, managed to find a way past Hamilton to make it a Ferrari 2-3.

The positions remained unchanged until, in the closing stages of the race, Hamilton pulled to the side of the track, telling his team he “lost power”.  The two words signalled Hamilton’s first retirement since Malaysia 2016 and Mercedes’ first double DNF since Spain of the same year.

Meanwhile, the Ferraris were closing the gap to Verstappen at the front of the field. Raikkonen was able to cut the gap from more than 10 seconds to just 1.5s, but was never close enough to make a move on the Red Bull.

Verstappen took his fourth career victory and first of the season, ahead of Raikkonen and Vettel.

There was less to celebrate on the other side of the garage. Ricciardo had been battling for fourth with Hamilton when he was forced to stop on track with a hydraulics problem.

The retirements ahead meant the Haas of Romain Grosjean finished fourth after a quiet race from sixth on the grid. Team-mate Kevin Magnussen followed him across the line to take fifth, Haas’ best Formula 1 finish in its short history.

After a difficult start to its 200th F1 race, Force India also enjoyed a strong finish, with Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez finishing sixth and seventh.

Fernando Alonso started the race from the pit lane after McLaren opted to change his front wing in parc ferme. It was a slow start to the race for Alonso, but he quickly began to pick up positions, battling with Pierre Gasly and the Saubers of Charles Leclerc and Marcus Ericsson in the closing stages of the race. Some impressive overtakes put Alonso eighth, his first points finish since Spain, with Leclerc and Ericsson completing the top 10.

Gasly finished just outside the top 10 ahead of the lone Renault of Carlos Sainz.

Sainz’s team-mate Nico Hulkenberg had been the first casualty of the Red Bull Ring. Not long before Bottas’ retirement, Hulkenberg suffered a dramatic engine failure, with smoke and flames erupting from the back of his Renault.

The Williams’ duo of Sergey Sirotkin and Lance Stroll took 13th and 14th, the final finishers.

McLaren’s Stoffel Vandoorne, who spent most of the race running at the back of the field after an early pit stop, retired six laps before the chequered flag with a gearbox issue. Brendon Hartley lasted 54 of the 71 laps before retiring with a mechanical problem.

Austrian GP: Free Practice #3 - RE-CAP & TIMES

AUSTRIAN GP - FREE PRACTICE #3 - RE-CAP & TIMES

Sebastian Vettel topped the times in the final free practice session ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix.

Both Vettel and team-mate Kimi Raikkonen were able to bring the fight to Mercedes, who dominated the first two practice sessions at the Red Bull Ring.

Vettel set his fastest time of the morning, an outright track record of 1m04.070s, in the final 15 minutes of the hour long session.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, who topped both Friday practice sessions, came within 0.03s of Vettel’s best time, but couldn’t quite match the Ferrari.

Valtteri Bottas and Raikkonen were both top of the times early in the session, but dropped down to third and fourth before the chequered flag.

Red Bull had been running fifth and sixth when Max Verstappen pulled to a stop in front of the Dutch fans 10 minutes before the chequered flag. Verstapen told the engineers the engine had shut off and he’d lost power steering, with a turbo inlet problem suspected to be the cause.

Verstappen wasn’t the only driver to stop on track. With only a handful of seconds left on the clock, Charles Leclerc brought his Sauber to a stop. The rookie had only just left the pits when he became stuck in fifth gear. He quickly recognised the problem and came to a stop not far from the pits.

Kerbs continued to be a problem for Toro Rosso and McLaren, with Brendon Hartley and Stoffel Vandoorne suffering front wing damage after running over the sausage kerbs. Both managed to return to the pits, though only managed 17th and 18th overall, just ahead of the Williams duo.

Haas took best of the rest, with Romain Grosjean finishing seventh ahead of Kevin Magnussen, Carlos Sainz, and Leclerc.

Nico Hulkenberg finished just outside the top 10 in P11, followed by Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon, Fernando Alonso, Sergio Perez, and Marcus Ericsson.

Austrian GP: Free Practice #1 - RE-CAP & TIMES

AUSTRIAN GP - FREE PRACTICE #1 - RE-CAP & TIMES

Mercedes led the pack in the first practice session of the Austrian GP weekend. This race weekend is the second of three back-to-back GP weekends and is 2018's only triple-header.

Lewis Hamilton took the top spot with a fastest time of 1:04.839. Team-mate, Bottas, was close behind with a 1:04.966.

It's Red Bull's home race and crowd favorite, Max Verstappen was third, setting a 1:05.072. Vettel and Ricciardo completed the top 5.

Robert Kubica filled in for Sergey Sirotkin at Williams for this session. The Polish Ex-F1 driver finished in 20th with a 1:07.424. Lance Stroll finished a few spaces above in 16th with a 1:06.567.

Stoffel Vandoorne ran into some issues with the kerbs, resulting in the nose of his McLaren sustaining quite a bit of damage. He ended up finishing the session in 18th, ahead of Hartley and Kubica. Alonso was only one place behind in 17th with a 1:06.612. McLaren also ended up with a fine after unsafely releasing Vandoorne in the pit-lane.

Charles Leclerc, who has been the main talking point over the last few weekends, having been rumoured to have agreed to a 2 year deal with Ferrari, was once again in the top 10, in 9th with a 1:06.215. Leclerc is repeatedly giving Sauber some of their best results that they've had in years. Ericsson was not far behind either, finishing the session in 11th.

Raikkonen, Grosjean, Ocon and Gasly all also finished within the top 10.

Austrian GP: Driver Preview Quotes - Renault

DRIVER PREVIEW QUOTES - RENAULT SPORT FORMULA ONE TEAM

Nico Hulkenberg - “Austria is always such a welcoming event with a very relaxed atmosphere and usually a lot of German fans who make the trip over the border. Now that Germany is back on the calendar, it’s not quite a home race for me, but last year it certainly felt a little bit like that!

It’s a short lap with just 10 corners to get through, but it’s certainly no easy ride. It’s challenging and technical, with elevation changes, big kerbs you need to watch and a mix of low to high-speed corners. I’d say there’s more at this circuit than meets the eye! We struggled slightly with understeer and keeping the rear tyres cool last year, so that’ll be something to assess in the early running on Friday.”

Carlos Sainz - “The view in Austria is obviously spectacular, and it’s one of the best backdrops at any circuit in the world. It’s definitely one of the cooler places to go racing – something fresh to what we usually do and see – and certainly one I look forward to with excitement.

It’s not an easy lap to get through…There are elevation changes, as you go up the hills and back down again, high kerbs which will break the car if you hit them too hard and a variety of corner lengths and speeds. There are plenty of things to keep you on guard. The circuit has a lot of grip and is quite a smooth surface, so that makes things slightly easier."

It’s a cool circuit, nice location, and the car was working very well in France, so I’m very happy with that. Hopefully, that’s going to keep being the case in Austria, and at Silverstone and some more, because I think we’ve got the potential to do that.

My favourite parts of the track in Austria? The high-speed corners – 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 – the whole of the last sector. You carry much more speed and it carries such a good feeling. With these cars, it’s faster and even better. I’m very much looking forward to going there and racing.”

Kevin Magnussen - “The Red Bull Ring is a good little circuit. It’s a little bit unique. It’s a very small area. It kind of reminds me of a go-kart track in that you can basically see the whole track from the grandstands. It’s quite nice and compact, but still with some fast corners and long straights, giving some opportunities to overtake. When I’ve raced there, it’s been entertaining. It’s a fun little track. I would say Turns 9 and 10 – the last two corners of the track, they’re cool. They’re challenging with the off-camber, then the on-camber. First, in Turn 9, the track leans to the outside, then at Turn 10, it leans to the inside. It’s pretty challenging… it’s like a short rollercoaster ride.”

Austrian GP: Driver Preview Quotes - Williams

DRIVER PREVIEW  QUOTES - WILLIAMS MARTINI RACING

Lance Stroll - “This is just a great track. I love it and everything about it – the scenery, the elevation, the whole thing is just fantastic. It is such a beautiful place and such a beautiful circuit, and definitely one of my favourites. When I got there last year it was very familiar as it was the first track we went to where I had already raced in Formula 3, and on top of that had a couple of wins.”

Sergey Sirotkin - “I like a lot of the Austria track. It’s not a long lap and it doesn’t have many corners, but I like the layout. I’m looking forward to it. The circuit suits some bits of our car better so overall, I can expect a good weekend there. It’s going to be important to keep it up before the summer break.”
