Spanish GP: Driver Preview Quotes - Williams

DRIVER PREVIEW QUOTES - WILLIAMS MARTINI RACING

Valtteri Bottas - “Barcelona is probably the track I’ve driven the most in my life because all of the pre-season testing normally takes place there. I like the track and I like Barcelona as city as well, it is a nice place to stay. The weather is always good around this time of the year. It is a nice event, overall, and there are plenty of fans, so it would be nice to have a good result there, especially because testing looked good for us there.”

Felipe Massa - “Spain is always a track that most of the drivers know 100 percent because we are always testing there in the winter. So I’d say that everyone pretty much knows the track. It is a circuit that a good car overall normally goes well because you have a little bit of everything; high-speed corners and low-speed corners. If the car works well here, it will work well on most of the tracks. I’m looking forward to having a good race there and hope that we can keep improving race by race, and keep scoring points. To be able to fight for a podium would be great. We know it won’t be easy but we will try everything we can.”

Spanish GP: Driver Preview Quotes - Red Bull

DRIVER PREVIEW QUOTES - RED BULL RACING FORMULA 1 TEAM

Daniel Ricciardo - “Barcelona marks the start of the summer, the weather is starting to get better and we usually go pretty well at the Circuit de Catalunya so I’m looking forward to it. I know the track well as we spend quite a lot of time there but there’s always things to learn from the track though so I don’t want to say I know it all, but having had a few races in the car it’s about putting it all together and having a strong weekend.

It’s a relatively high down force circuit so we can strap most of the things on the car that make it go faster. It’s quite hard on tyres so we are normally a bit stronger than some other teams in that area. It could provide a good opportunity for us to get close to the podium.

I stay in a motorhome for the whole race week as it’s just a lot more convenient, but I would love to spend some more time in the city to be honest. I really like Barcelona. It has a really cool culture and some awesome Tapas places.”

Max Verstappen - “I’m very excited for the opportunity to drive for Red Bull Racing and I can’t wait to jump in the car in Barcelona. I have a lot of work to do ahead of the race, lots of data to study but luckily it’s a track I know well because we have driven there so much.

The main straight is quite a long one, so you need a good top speed. For me the best parts of the track are Turn 3 and Turn 9, as they are both high-speed ones. The last sector is also interesting, as it’s very technical and hard on tyres. The crowd is also one you always notice, with many Spanish fans showing their support and enjoying the racing!”

Spanish GP: Driver Preview Quotes - Renault

DRIVER PREVIEW QUOTES - RENAULT SPORT FORMULA 1 TEAM

Jolyon Palmer - “A strong, solid weekend would be nice. We’ve made progress with the car and I’m happy with the balance and how it drives again. Kevin scored points for the team in Russia so we know what’s possible. It’s the first race in Europe and at a track we all know really well. I’m pretty pumped-up for a strong weekend.

I’ve been (to Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit) many times and it’s a track that most Formula One drivers know extremely well, even just from the pre-season testing we’ve already done there this year. From a driving point of view we know exactly what to expect, however it’s traditionally the first circuit where you see a lot of updates brought so you can see some differences in relative competitiveness depending on who’s got updates, and how well those updates work.

I had a double podium there in 2014 with two second places in the GP2 Series with some good overtakes in two fun races there. It’s not been a circuit that’s been especially kind to me, but it’s a good challenge and one I enjoy. Barcelona’s a cool city. The weather’s nice, the atmosphere’s always good and it’s just a very happening place with great culture. There’s also strong enthusiasm for Formula One.”

Kevin Magnussen - The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya can offer some really good racing, then some years you have quite a dull race. I can remember when Williams took their last win: that was a really exciting race. You can see surprises here.

The reason Barcelona is a test track is because it has almost every type of corner. It has chicanes, it has fast corners, it has slow corners, it has big braking zones, it has corners when you prioritize speed on entry and it has corners where you focus on the exit: it has everything. It’s a perfect test track, but in anything it does have more high speed than low speed corners so you need a nicely balanced car and tyre wear can get a little bit tricky: you can’t really run the softest tyres there. I won my World Series by Renault Championship there, which is always a good memory.”

John Booth Joins Toro Rosso

Scuderia Toro Rosso welcomed former Manor team boss John Booth into the garage last weekend in Sochi.

It was a shock last year when Booth and Manor’s sporting director, Graeme Lowdon, announced they would be leaving the Manor F1 team, with Booth having worked with the squad since 2010. When Manor switched to LMP2 in the World Endurance Championship, Booth followed them, but now he’s back in the Formula One paddock.

“It is a great honour to join such a well-established and competitive team as Scuderia Toro Rosso,” said Booth. “It is a team that has achieved so much in a relatively short space of time.”

“I have known John for many years and I am delighted to welcome him to the team,” said team Principal Franz Tost. “Formula 1 is becoming ever more complex, with recent changes on the tyre front, car set-up, radio communications and so forth. Therefore, having a competitive car and talented drivers, both of which we have, on its own is not enough. With his vast experience, I am sure John will help the team raise the game and become a more effective force over a race weekend.”

Booth joins the team on a consultancy basis as Director of Racing, as well as continuing his work in the Manor WEC team.

There were no points for the team in Booth’s first STR race, with a twelfth place for Carlos Sainz and a retirement for Max Verstappen, but everyone is already looking forward to the next race in Spain.

F1 Heading to Vegas?

It’s easy to see why those in charge are chasing a Formula One race on the glamourous Las Vegas strip. With champagne podiums and yachts in Monaco, the image of a Las Vagas race seems fitting. But is the raceactually going to go ahead?

Back in April, Bernie Ecclestone believed the new race could be on the calendar as early as 2018, but when asked by motorsport.com on the progress last weekend, the F1 boss wasn’t quite so optimistic.

“We are struggling a little bit, yeah,” he said. “I want to make sure we are on The Strip, so when people turn their television on, they immediately know it is Vegas.”

It might seem like an impossible dream, but with Formula E racing in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower last month, it might not be as difficult as expected. Ecclestone is in talks with potential promoters for the race in Las Vegas and has confirmed there are other State side options if the Las Vegas plan doesn’t go through.

“We missed out a little bit of New York, but lots of places are talking about it,” he said.

What might cause more of a problem is the calendar length. With twenty one races already on the calendar and personalities in the sport already complaining about the length, any additional race won’t be something everyone will be happy with.

Verstappen Confirmed at Red Bull for rest of 2016 Season

Max Verstappen has just been confirmed at Red Bull for the rest of the F1 season with immediate effect. Daniil Kvyat has been sent back to Toro Rosso. This news comes after a big stir in the media about Verstappen potentially getting the seat in 2017. However, Verstappen's chance at driving for one of the big-time teams has come sooner than expected.

Daniil Kvyat has recently been under fire after crashing into Sebastian Vettel two races in a row. Many have been talking about the situations and have even taking to calling Kvyat "Reckless" and "Idiotic". Ferrari team principal, Arrivabene was quoted in saying -  "You can accept it the first time, but not the second time."

Russian GP: Race - Re-Cap & Results

RUSSIAN GRAND PRIX - RACE

Nico Rosberg was in control in Sochi, taking the first grand slam of his career with a pole position, fastest lap, and a race win in the fourth race of the 2016 championship, whilst team mate Lewis Hamilton took on the challenge of starting tenth to finish second. Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen completed the podium.

The return of the power unit problem that Hamilton saw in China ruled the Brit out of the third qualifying session and put him in tenth on the grid whilst team mate Rosberg started on pole. A new gearbox gave Sebastian Vettel a five place grid penalty, lining him up alongside his friend from China, Daniil Kvyat.

It was a fantastic start for Rosberg off of the line, with Raikkonen taking second place from fellow Finn Valtteri Bottas. Behind them, Felipe Massa kept fourth whilst Hamilton burst through the field.

Behind them, chaos.

Vettel had gained off of the line, pulling up alongside Red Bull’s Daniel Riccardo. Behind him, Kvyat was flying, right into the rear of the Ferrari. Riccardo was sent wide but Vettel kept going, only for Kvyat to crash into him again and send the Ferrari spinning.

After the crash at the last race, Vettel was not best pleased.

“Today it was not my fault, there was nothing I could have done differently, nothing I would change. I don’t dislike him (Kvyat), but I think he did a mistake two weeks ago, he made a mistake today but it doesn’t help me now. Obviously I would have loved to drive the car today to feel if we could keep the same balance into the race, but for the future nothing has changed. Of course I’m disappointed but we’re already focused on the next race.

Once the crash had been cleared and the safety car returned to the pits, Hamilton was back on the move, quickly overtaking Massa and catching up with the all Finn battle for second place. He would have to wait until the pit stop window to make another place though, allowing Rosberg to drive off into the sun set.

A quick stop for Williams kept Bottas just ahead of Hamilton after the pit stop, but the Mercedes driver was within DRS range, and overtook the Williams as Raikkonen headed into the pits. The Ferrari came out between the two of them, gaining the place from Bottas.

Hamilton was in net second and set off to catch his team mate, but a water pressure problem kept Hamilton from getting too close and Rosberg finished the race with a gap of over 18 seconds to his team mate.

Behind them, Raikkonen finished third. The Finn said it was the best he could do for the weekend.

“It’s a pity not to be fighting for the win, but we take this result and keep on working to put ourselves in a better position.”

Further down the field, Williams took a fourth and a fifth place finish in a rather quiet second half of the race, closing the gap to constructors’ championship rival Red Bull. It was a good race for the team, but more was expected after qualifying put them in such a promising position.

“The car performance is going forward, even in race trim today,” said Williams’ head of performance, Rob Smedley. “We had improving pace against Ferrari and Mercedes and that’s what we need to keep heading towards… We’ve developed the car a lot, but we need another two or three tenths, and we just need to keep developing it, in all areas. Nobody is free from finding performance in Formula One, and certainly not at Williams, but I think we got the most we could have done out of today.”

Also having a good day was McLaren, with their first double points finish since Hungary last year. The pair started the race outside the top ten but benefited from the chaos ahead of them in the opening laps. Alonso was promoted into seventh by the time the safety car came out, and gifted another place with Toro Rosso driver Max Verstappen was forced to retire.

Jenson Button had a more challenging race, battling just outside the top ten with Romain Groskean, Sergio Perez, and Carlos Sainz. In the closing stages of the race, a lock up from Sainz allowed Button to catch up and take the place, finishing the race in tenth, giving the team their best finish of the season so far.

Renault’s Kevin Magnussen, Haas’ Romain Grosjean, and Force India’s Sergio Perez also took points from Sochi.
