Japanese GP: Qualifying - Re-Cap & Results

Qualifying - Re-Cap & Results:

Saturday sessions at Suzuka are now over and it was for sure an eventful day. With all practice sessions completed, it was time for Qualifying.

If you're not used to how F1 Qualifying works, we always walk through it to make it easier to understand for new F1 fans, so here we go!

Qualifying is divided into 3 sessions and is done to see who will start where on the grid for the race. The front position is called "Pole" and is were everyone wants to start. It's the main advantage.

Round 1 gives drivers 18 Minutes on the clock to go out and set their fastest times. The 6 slowest in this round will not move on to Q2, and will start on the respective 17th through 22nd grid slots. Knocked out of Q1 were: Max Chilton, Jules Bianchi, Marcus Ericsson, Kamui Kobayashi, Romain Grosjean & Pastor Maldonado.

Round 2 is the same rules except drivers get 15 ninutes. These drivers will start on grid slots 11 through 16. Knocked out of Q2 were: Sergio Perez, Nico Hulkenberg, Esteban Gutierrez, Adrian Sutil, Jean-Eric Vergne & Daniil Kvyat.

On to Round 3, the last 10 cars battle it out for the last 10 positions and they get 12 minutes to do so. Nico Rosberg had the fastest final time and will start on Pole Position for the Japanese GP.

Here is the current Grid Line-Up for tomorrow's race. Both Pastor Maldonado and Jean-Eric Vergne have 10-Place-Grid-Penalties for using 6th engine components. While Vergne's penalty put him a full 10 spaces back, Maldonado had qualified 17th, so he can only move 5 spaces back. The other 5 spaces of his penalty will be carried over to Russia.
